“Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher.” – Oprah Winfrey
I love that quote. And not just because Oprah said it. It’s such a powerful statement and incredibly helpful to remember when choosing who you spend your time with. Best friends, close family members, and significant others are most definitely a wonderful source of happiness in our daily lives. We should be thankful each and every day for these people who inspire us, strengthen us, make us smile, and brighten each day.
But there’s a deeper meaning, too. Oprah specifically uses the word higher, and this is not on accident. We cannot rely on others, not even our most treasured loved ones, to be our only source of happiness. We must first be happy from within, and this is not an easy task. To love oneself, to be self-confident but not cocky, to have inner strength, and to maintain a positive outlook amidst multiple adversities – in this day and age especially? Talk about challenging. But not impossible.
To have great friends you must be a great friend. To lean on others when necessary you must be their shoulder to lean on as well. To be lifted by others, help them boost you up. Build happiness first from within.
